Richmond Main Street brought Holiday Cheer to downtown with the annual Holiday Festival, a two-part celebration for residents of the Iron Triangle. Nearly 400 children from local schools enjoyed a morning filled with an educational and entertaining puppet show, music and dancing, arts and crafts, tasty treats, and a visit with Santa. Later that day hundreds of families visited the festival to enjoy live seasonal music, engaging arts and crafts activities, healthy snacks, gift giving, and the opportunity to visit with Santa. Every child left with a present, gift bag filled with goodies, and memories that are sure to last. Overall, nearly 1000 residents attended the event--a record!

Our 3rd Annual fundraiser, the Spirit & Soul Festival, took place on Saturday, September 17, 2011. On that day the community gathered in the Community Green Space Park for spectacular performances by LaChic!, Derrick Hall, Sekhou Senegal, and Ray Obiedo, delicious healthy soul food by the Natural Healing Tree, delectable wines, and an open air market featuring local artisans. We also honored downtown champions Janet Johnson, Bennie Singleton, Joanne King, Betty Reid Soskin, and Fred D. Jackson for their commitment to improving downtown.

The 10th Annual Music on the Main Summer Concert Series brought record-breaking crowds to downtown for evenings filled with food, vendors, arts and crafts for children and top-notch musical entertainment and dance performances by the Iron Triangle Urban Ballet, Redd Fromer Band, Andre Thierry & Zydeco Magic, Hula Ohana Hokulani, Ray McCoy, Jesse James, the College Prep Dancers, Richmond Bloco, and LAVA.

Celebrating warm weather and sunny days with fresh produce and outdoor activities at the Healthy Village Farm Stand in the Community “Green” Space every 1st Friday of the month from June-August. Enjoy an afternoon of fun in the sun: pick up free farm fresh produce and healthy meal recipes, snack on tasty wholesome treats, engage in fun exercise activities, and more!

10 young people participated in our 4th Annual Summer Youth Entrepreneur Program. They underwent two weeks of work preparedness and entrepreneurship training and gained first-hand experience by working in businesses downtown and throughout the city.

In 2011 we continued our commitment to strengthen downtown businesses by partnering with Mechanics Bank and the Renaissance Entrepreneur Center to offer Start and Grow Smart, a free business assistance program available to entrepreneurs of all levels. Participants met with a consultant to learn about entrepreneurship and the ins and outs of small business ownership. We received an overwhelmingly positive response to the course and expanded it to include a second session in October.

We proudly collaborated with downtown property owners Paradigm Contractors and Nasser Real Estate, and local artists to bring two Art In Windows exhibitions to life. These multidisciplinary public art projects highlighted the works of Virginia Jourdan, Malik Seneferu, Ron C. Smith, and Slimm Buick, whose art transformed vacant storefronts into 24-hour galleries.
