<em>In Search of My Father …WALKIN’ TALKIN’ BILL HAWKINS</em> is written and performed by W. Allen Taylor, who began his creative process for this piece with a commission from East Bay Center nearly 15 year ago. Original direction is by Ellen Sebastian Chang. The play recalls Taylor&#8217;s adventurous search for his absent father Bill Hawkins, the first black disc jockey in Cleveland, Ohio. The 90-minute show follows the inspiring and heartwarming true story of Taylor&#8217;s journey of self-discovery and destiny as he performs a range of richly defined characters. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Nominate a Student: Young Artist Diploma Program Scholarship 2012-2013</strong></p>
<p>The East Bay Center for the Performing Arts is now accepting nominations from school administrators, teachers, performing arts/musical directors and leaders of youth organizations. You are invited to nominate a young person between the ages of <strong>12 and 17</strong> to receive <strong>a full 4-year scholarship to their Young Artist Diploma Program! </strong> This scholarship affords professional training through private instrumental music lessons (guitar, piano, drums, flute, violin, etc.); theater; voice; steel pans; various dance genres (ballet, modern, hip-hop, traditional West African and Mexican dance) and film/video.  There are no zip code or income requirements for acceptance, however students who live or attend school in the proximity of the Center are strongly encouraged to apply.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>How to nominate a student:</strong></span><br />
Contact Randall Wong at 510-323-2492 or Ruthie Dineen at 510-323-2499 to obtain a Nomination Form.  By completing a Nomination Form, your nominees are guaranteed an interview and conditional admission.  We encourage you to submit your nomination(s) in April, but we will continue to accept nominations through May 4th. <strong>Scholarships are limited, so please contact them with the names of your nominees as soon as possible.</strong></p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Who are accepted:</strong></span><br />
Eligible students must be entering 7th through 11th grade, and demonstrate high potential in one or more areas of the performing arts.  Preferred students will have leadership experience, and a strong desire to expand their knowledge and skills through rigorous training in a variety of art forms.  Students must also show a strong passion and commitment to the arts.  Once admitted into the Young Artist Diploma Program, students are expected to participate in 6 hours per week of instruction during the academic year, as well as participate in our 5-week summer intensive, from June 25 through July 27, 2012.</p>

<p>“Paul Robeson: Tribute to an Artist”<br />
29-minute documentary, narrated by Sidney Poitier, made in 1979, winner of Academy Award OSCAR for Best Documentary, traces Robeson&#8217;s career through his activism and his socially charged performances of his signature song, Ol&#8217; Man River.</p>
