About the Show
In Search of My Father …WALKIN’ TALKIN’ BILL HAWKINS is written and performed by W. Allen Taylor, who began his creative process for this piece with a commission from East Bay Center nearly 15 year ago. Original direction is by Ellen Sebastian Chang. The play recalls Taylor’s adventurous search for his absent father Bill Hawkins, the first black disc jockey in Cleveland, Ohio. The 90-minute show follows the inspiring and heartwarming true story of Taylor’s journey of self-discovery and destiny as he performs a range of richly defined characters. About the Chef
Rene Johnson is chef and owner of the Blackberry Soul Bakery & Café in Oakland. An outstanding baker, Ms. Johnson has received an abundance of recognition for her culinary flair. She is the winner of the 2004 “Taste Of the Bay” Award, a requested favorite for the “100 Chefs Can Cook” United Negro College Fundraiser, and has participated in various community events including many of the local Jazz Festivals. The East Bay Center for the Performing Arts, located in the historic Winters Building, has worked with more than 50,000 student artists over the past 44 years, from all walks of life, to develop skills that enable them to think, lead, and contribute to the world around them. Through the active creation of original music, film, theater, and dance, coupled with self-determined community projects, East Bay Center emphasizes the performing arts and social justice, by preparing students with the skills to create and the courage to perform. The East Bay Center for the Performing Arts is now accepting nominations from school administrators, teachers, performing arts/musical directors and leaders of youth organizations. You are invited to nominate a young person between the ages of 12 and 17 to receive a full 4-year scholarship to their Young Artist Diploma Program! This scholarship affords professional training through private instrumental music lessons (guitar, piano, drums, flute, violin, etc.); theater; voice; steel pans; various dance genres (ballet, modern, hip-hop, traditional West African and Mexican dance) and film/video. There are no zip code or income requirements for acceptance, however students who live or attend school in the proximity of the Center are strongly encouraged to apply.

How to nominate a student:
Contact Randall Wong at 510-323-2492 or Ruthie Dineen at 510-323-2499 to obtain a Nomination Form. By completing a Nomination Form, your nominees are guaranteed an interview and conditional admission. We encourage you to submit your nomination(s) in April, but we will continue to accept nominations through May 4th. Scholarships are limited, so please contact them with the names of your nominees as soon as possible.

Who are accepted:
Eligible students must be entering 7th through 11th grade, and demonstrate high potential in one or more areas of the performing arts. Preferred students will have leadership experience, and a strong desire to expand their knowledge and skills through rigorous training in a variety of art forms. Students must also show a strong passion and commitment to the arts. Once admitted into the Young Artist Diploma Program, students are expected to participate in 6 hours per week of instruction during the academic year, as well as participate in our 5-week summer intensive, from June 25 through July 27, 2012.

The goal of this FREE workshop is “to provide legal support to small-scale food enterprises serving low-income communities to enable their full participation as entrepreneurs in a sustainable economy.”  To that end attorneys and students will present on 15 different legal topics that people in the food business confront.

This compact evening can save food business entrepreneurs weeks of searching around to make sure they have everything needed to start and/or grow a successful restaurant or other food business.

Free individual consultations will also be available on other evenings.

Rev. Phil Lawson of the Bay Area Paul Robeson Centennial Committee will introduce a short film about the legendary artist, athlete and activist:

“Paul Robeson: Tribute to an Artist”
29-minute documentary, narrated by Sidney Poitier, made in 1979, winner of Academy Award OSCAR for Best Documentary, traces Robeson’s career through his activism and his socially charged performances of his signature song, Ol’ Man River.

The Tobacco Prevention Project is looking for a Coordinator to work as part of the team on policy-related functions, including community capacity building to address tobacco use through local tobacco policy change.

DIE WINTERREISE

East Bay Center is proud to present a performance of Schubert’s “Die Winterreise”.  This demanding and seldom-performed song-cycle will be sung by baritone
John Vergin, with accompaniment by pianist, Denise VanLeuven.  Using the poetry of Wilhelm Muller, Schubert wrote these dramatic, dark pieces at the end of his life, depicting a journey of the soul through a wintery landscape of sadness, beauty, elation, and despair.
